Private surrender. Archie did not get along with his former owners' very young children so they felt it was best he was re-homed, as they are expecting a new member of the family to arrive shortly also. Archie's family were very sad to let him go as he was a beloved pet and simply want the very best for him!
Archie's former owner describes him as "loving and loyal" with "heaps" of energy. Archie is friendly, happy go lucky and sweet. He is great with other dogs and loves to play! The former owners state that Archie can be stubborn and likes to "have the last say". Archie is however very clever and knows his basic training commands.
Archie's foster has let us know that Archie is very independent, and she feels he is a well trained dog. He is not so much a "lap dog" and won't bother you, but does like to be near you. He responds well to his name, is toilet trained, knows how to walk on a leash, knows his basic commands and loves food! Archie is also very polite. He will allow people to carry him, pet him, and touch his paws with ease. He is very compliant.
Archie enjoys walks, but doesn't really like car rides. Archie can be a bit of a barker and will need consistent training with his barking. Archie has been known to possessively guard his food.
Archie has lived with a cat prior - he was fine with the cat but would chase it playfully if it ran. Archie has learnt not to annoy confident cats and would be fine with cats that are used to having dogs around. He is living with alpacas, sheep, chickens and other dogs currently.
Archie's only downside is that he is a persistent barker. He needs to be with someone who is aware of this and accepting, or confident and capable of training this behavior out of him. We are working on this in care at present, but a portion of the "work" will always need to be continued or completed by the Adopter in his new home environment. We think if he had a quiet home away from stimulus such as cars and passersby, this would be a non-issue for Archie.
* More information to be added at a later date - once we get to know Archie better.
Archie's former owners state that he has experienced seizures which are triggered by stress. He is not medicated at present as they are not often (around 1-2 per year). He has had one in care which was brought on by barking at neighbors and becoming over-stimulated. For this reason, we have very specific adopter requirements for him, as below.
Archie received his preliminary check and vaccines with our vet on 21/07/2020 and was cleared medically to adopt.
Archie has been flea and wormed while in Trust care (we do so every 3 months).
Archie is de-sexed. He will be adopted out vaccinated up to date, micro-chipped with his details added to the NZCAR database and registered with the Christchurch City Council.
Due to his health, Archie has very specific requirements, please only apply if you meet the following:
- Archie is being fostered on a lifestyle block in South Canterbury and we are looking for a similar, lifestyle property home located in/around Canterbury for Archie. The reason being, he needs a very quiet environment - without cars or neighbors close by as he can become stimulated and bark at these, which may bring on a seizure.
- Fencing is a must. Archie will need a fully enclosed property with fences of a decent height, no holes or gaps.
- No full time workers please. Archie would suit a part time worker, someone working from home or active but retired. Archie comes from a home where he always had someone home and wouldn't suit a full time worker's schedule.
- Best suited to a home with children 10 years+ who are doggy-knowledgeable and give him plenty of space.
- Archie has been known to chase cats on his walks. He would be OK with VERY confident cats only. He is currently fostered on a lifestyle property around lambs, alpacas, chickens and other dogs.
- Would be fine as a companion for another dog, or as a solo dog in the home.
* Further requirements will be added at a later date.
NOTE: Before applying for our dogs, please do read the above adopter requirements and ensure that you meet these. We are very clear about the homes we are seeking. We set the adopter requirements after consultation with the foster carers and consideration of the dogs, needs, welfare and personality. They are strict requirements - no exceptions. Please do not submit an application if you do not meet the above, we will simply respond to confirm the application is declined. Unfortunately, at times this has been the case and we have had to disappoint prospective adopters. This is why we are clear about our requirements prior and note them above.
Adoption Fee: $400.00.
NOTE ON THE ADOPTION FEES AND TRIALS: Our adoption fees are determined by taking into account age of the dog, overall health and funds expended to date on that particular dog. The trust uses these adoption fee funds on: desexing surgery, micro-chip and NZCAR registration, vaccines, Council registration, flea and worm treatments, plus any other essentials dogs require such as specialist medications or food, blood-testing, orthopedic surgeries etc. and any other dog disposables required for dogs in care. Please note: sorry we do not accept payment plans, as we need to be sure adopters are able to financially support dogs prior to adoption - sorry, no exceptions. Please note: the deposit needs to be made to the trust account prior to the changeover date of the dog going on trial. We do not accept cash payments on the date. The full100% of all adoption fees go towards the dogs in the care of the Trust.
