Delilah and Bear were surrendered by their former owner who is moving to an apartment and cannot take the dogs with them. We are advised that both dogs went to live with their owners at 6 weeks old (not advisable for puppies to leave their parents before 8 weeks minimum).
Bear and Delilah have been separated as they each have their own individual needs and issues to work on separately. Delilah has already benefited from this arrangement and grown in confidence.
Delilah's foster mum says: "Delilah is our pretty poofy princess with attitude. Delilah is a funny, quirky, clever, brilliant, sweet little dog with a lot of layers to her. You can tell she isn't used to being able to trust humans initially, but once she opens up to you and lets you into her beautiful little personality, you will fall in love. When she feels safe around someone, she is trusting and just wants to make her owner happy. Delilah is a really cool little dog. If someone takes the time and patience to get to know her, at her pace, they will find out what a wonderful companion she would be. If I didn't have my own five already, I would happily add Delilah into my permanent pack."'
Delilah is fairly wary of strangers and like many Chihuahuas, prefers to be around the people she knows. But it does not take long for her to become comfortable if you approach her correctly. Delilah needs to be ignored when met initially, so that she can come around in her own time. Do not overwhelm with affection when first meeting Delilah. Be patient, allow her to sniff, chat to her without touching until she pops up onto your lap and demands the affection!
Once she likes you though, she is very sweet, affectionate and loyal. Delilah will make a great companion to the right person because if she gains trust in you, she will be eager to please.
Delilah loves the odd pet and scratch, but is quite independent so happy to sit next to you rather than be continuously on your lap.
Delilah likes to follow you around the home and "supervise" what you're doing. She is a "people" dog, but just for those she considers "her people".
When strangers come to the home she can bark, so she needs someone to firmly tell her "no" and make sure the situation does not escalate. Again, once she trusts and respects you, she will listen as she is very obedient.
Delilah is very clever, she has great recall and could be taught other commands. Delilah enjoys car rides or walks. Delilah is great in the car, very quiet, sits and looks out the window or sleeps.
Delilah is not immediately a fan of other dogs, but does adjust. She would not be happy around energetic or boisterous dogs or young puppies as she is not very tolerant of that behavior. Delilah is being fostered with 4 other small dogs at present that she largely ignores. She will sometimes play with them a little but this has been a work in progress. We think that she would probably prefer to be the solo dog in the home OR maybe with a an older male, small breed dog, of similar low energy. Delilah isn't a fan of large dogs.
Delilah is quite quiet and prefers to keep to herself. Delilah would suit a quiet home with not too many visitors. She wouldn't enjoy being taken to a busy office or socialized with different humans. She is a quiet girl who prefers those she knows.
Delilah has a very thick coat. Although her former owners list her as a "Long Coat Chihuahua" we would say she is more likely to be a Pom x Chi, or Pap x Chi. Delilah has a very long and thick coat. Please note: she will need regular grooming and brushing with this coat. Delilah has already attended the groomers (Cerise of PetStock Belfast) and did wonderfully. We think she is used to being groomed.
Delilah has a birth deformity - her jaw is undershot. it doesn't affect her ability to eat or live a normal happy life. Just a quirk to note (see photos). We anticipate Delilah will need a dental while in care.
Delilah's former owner reports that she is prone to licking herself a lot. Particularly on her paws. We will keep an eye on this in foster care to determine whether it's medical or related to anxiety.
Delilah had her preliminary check at the vets on 17/07/2021. Delilah has luxating patellas on both sides. However, we haven't had her completely assessed (ie. as to whether she requires surgery or not as this can improve once she is at a normal weight). Once Delilah is at her optimal weight, we will have her re-assessed.
Delilah has retained baby teeth (at 7 years old!) which desperately need to be removed as they have rotted away and her mouth is inflamed, infected and painful. Delilah is booked in for bloods on 28/07/2021 and assuming she is healthy, we will proceed with a dental on that date.
Delilah requires a bit of weight-loss as she is currently 3.8kg! We would like to see her down at 3kg and will then re-assess her to see whether that's a healthy weight for her. As a result, she is currently being fed "Satiety" diet food. Any Adopter will need to continue with her weight-loss.
Delilah will be flea and worm treated every 3 months while in trust care, to be continued by the Adopter.
Delilah will be adopted out de-sexed, vaccinated up to date, micro-chipped (with the chip registered with the NZ Companion Animal Register and the local Council) as all of our dogs are.
Help us to Help Delilah!
New Zealand Chihuahua Rescue is a New Zealand Registered Charity run completely by volunteers. Nobody is paid to participate in our Rescue and 100% of the profits go back into the dogs in our care and community dogs needing assistance. We receive no public funding or grants. Our entire income to assist these dogs is derived from kind donations, sponsorship and fundraising projects. We are always short of money and it impacts how many dogs we can assist as each dog that comes into care needs some form of medical and/or behavioural assistance!
If you could help by donating to Delilah's cause, all donations, small or large, help us to help her! Please also contact us for a receipt and you can receive 33.33% of your donation back from the IRD.

Delilah will be in care while she continues her weight loss and has her dental. We will re-assess her once she is close to her goal weight to determine whether/not she needs operations on her patellas. As such, Delilah is not available at present and will not be ready to adopt for some time (Note: we do not have any time estimations. It takes as long as it takes!)
We will also get to know Delilah during their time in foster care and update this profile accordingly, including the adopter requirements (below).
- Delilah will need assistance from our team in integrating her into a new home as she is very wary of strangers. As a result, she is only for adoption within the Christchurch area. Please do not apply from other parts of New Zealand.
- Must have a fully fenced yard with no holes or gaps in the fencing - no exceptions.
- No full time workers. Those working from home (permanently), part time workers or retired would be a match for Delilah. She would not cope being placed in doggy daycare or taken to a busy workplace. We do not adopt to full time (out of the home) workers as Chihuahuas are companion dogs who like to be with people during the day and in our opinion, it is unfair for them to be alone 8+ hours a day, 5+ days per week. Sorry, no exceptions.
- Delilah would be best suited as a solo dog OR a companion to an older/calm energy dog. Delilah prefers the boys! and does not like larger breeds.
- Any Adopter interested in Delilah will need to ignore her initially when she comes into the home and allow her the time to adjust. She does not like being immediately overwhelmed, pet or picked up. An Adopter with doggy knowledge is essential and rescue dog knowledge would be an asset.
- No children in the home (or visiting frequently) who are 8 years and under. Delilah does not like noise and wouldn't do well around young children.
- Delilah has not been cat-tested.
* Please do not apply for Delilah - we have not listed their adopter requirements yet as we need time to get to know their personality and the type of owner required. If you are interested - Keep checking back here in time, for this profile to be updated!
PLEASE NOTE: Before applying for our dogs, please do read the above adopter requirements and ensure that you meet these. We are very clear about the homes we are seeking. We set the adopter requirements after consultation with the foster carers and consideration of the dogs, needs, welfare and personality. They are strict requirements - no exceptions. Please do not submit an application if you do not meet the above, we will simply respond to confirm the application is declined. Unfortunately, at times this has been the case and we have had to disappoint prospective adopters. This is why we are clear about our requirements prior and note them above.
Adoption Fee: $TBC. to be paid to the NZCR trust account no. 03-0823-0074502-000
PLEASE NOTE - RE: THE ADOPTION FEES AND TRIALS: Our adoption fees are determined by taking into account age of the dog, overall health and funds expended to date on that particular dog. The trust uses these adoption fee funds on: de-sexing surgery, micro-chip and NZCAR registration, vaccines, Council registration, flea and worm treatments, plus any other essentials dogs require such as specialist medications or food, blood-testing, orthopaedic surgeries etc. and any other dog disposables required for dogs in care. Please note: sorry we do not accept payment plans, as we need to be sure adopters are able to financially support dogs prior to adoption - sorry, no exceptions. Please note: the deposit needs to be made to the trust account prior to the changeover date of the dog going on trial. We do not accept cash payments on the date. The full100% of all adoption fees go towards the dogs in the care of the Trust.
