    Background:

Giuliana is pronounced "Julie-Ana". Also referred to as "Jules".

Like many dogs, circumstances changed for Giuliana’s former owner who is now working 14 hour days and feels Giuliana needs more companionship. Due to her owner being away from home so often Giuliana is developing separation anxiety which is making things even more difficult. Chihuahuas are toy breeds and really do benefit from daytime companionship. This is one of the reasons why we do not consider full time (out of the home) workers as Adopters. It just isn’t fair on the dog and can lead to many unwanted behaviors.

    Personality:

Giuliana is a very sweet little dog who loves humans that she knows. She is very affectionate and loving. Jules' foster mum says, "Jules need someone who is going to be delighted with what a sweet funny soul she is. Eternally happy and attention span of a gold fish!"

Giuliana’s former owner sums her up as follows:

    - Giuliana is described as a “lap dog,” who loves to be cuddled and have affection.

    - She has lots of energy and likes to play with toys, even though shes 9 years old.

    - Great with cats (lives with 8yo female cat now)

    - She is OK with new people, seems to love males in particular. But hasn’t been around any young children before. Neighbors kids intimidate her a little.

    - Loves to be walked, especially on the beach (But she must be on lead – as recall needs work).

    - Loves drives in the car (she has a child's booster seat she enjoys riding in).

    - Can be intimidated by other dogs so needs a slow intro, but quite social with friendly dogs.

    - Afraid of loud noises.

Guiliana came into care with severe anxiety issues, that are (at least in part) contributed to by her untreated epilepsy for the past 9 years. Jules needs a quiet, loving and understanding home, who will put her first. Cannot be left alone for large periods of time as she may howl, Jules loves company (other dogs or people).

    Health:

    • Giuliana was vet checked on 27/12/2021. Jules has a very minor heart murmur, not yet even a grade 1 - so need for any medications.
    • Initially Jules had some pain and possible instability in her hips. Her former owner advised us she ceased jumping up on the bed etc. On 05/01/2022 we investigated this and Jules was sedated for her x-rays. We have confirmed she has hip dysplasia. But since we began Jules on Synovan (anti-inflammatory injections), and 4Cyte supplements to assist, with Gabapentin, she has been back to her happy, bouncy self!
    • Giuliana's former owner notes that she has had the odd seizure - one every few months since a puppy. Our vet believes she suffers from epilepsy. As 15/02/2022 Jules has now been placed on the correct meds (Phenobarb) to address her seizures. This has stabilized her,  she will require this medication for life.
    • Giuliana suffered from high anxiety. We are not sure whether this is as a result of her surrender, pain, or neurological abnormalities. But this has been rectified with Jules learning her environment more and us addressing her pain.
    • Giuliana was spayed on 24/02/2022 and had two mammary lumps removed and sent off for testing.

Giuliana will be flea and worm treated every 3 months while in trust care, to be continued by the Adopter. Giuliana will be adopted out de-sexed, vaccinated up to date, micro-chipped (with the chip registered with the NZ Companion Animal Register and the local Council) as all of our dogs are.

    Help us to Help Giuliana!

New Zealand Chihuahua Rescue is a New Zealand Registered Charity run completely by volunteers. Nobody is paid to participate in our Rescue and 100% of the profits go back into the dogs in our care and community dogs needing assistance. We receive no public funding or grants. Our entire income to assist these dogs is derived from kind donations, sponsorship and fundraising projects. We are always short of money and it impacts how many dogs we can assist as each dog that comes into care needs some form of medical and/or behavioral assistance!

If you could help by donating to Giuliana's cause, all donations, small or large, help us to help her! Please also contact us for a receipt and you can receive 33.33% of your donation back from the IRD.

    Adopter Requirements:

    • We are ideally looking for a Canterbury home, as her foster carer may need to assist with transition. But would consider an out of town adoption for Jules provided that:   A) the adopter was able and willing to follow this process - including meeting  Jules and her foster carer here in Christchurch AND B) They MUST have  knowledge and experience with special needs dogs.

    • No full time workers need apply. Giuliana ideally needs someone who is retired, or works from home (permanently). If they are very part time, she would be OK if left with another doggy companion AND would need time to get used to your working schedule. Jules tends to howl if left alone too long. Jules would not be suitable for a busy working environment or doggy daycare. Jules needs someone present and able to spend time with her.

    • Guiliana needs a very secure home - full fencing with NO holes or gaps. When she is first introduced to somewhere she may be anxious and frantic and look for a "way out" so you will need an "escape proof" backyard.

    • Jules would do fine with one or two older, small breed dog(s). But they need to be submissive, not dominant as Jules has a soft, sweet personality. Also no high-energy or young puppies, as that could stress her.

    • Jules needs an adopter who is financially able to continue to meet the costs of her treatment for epilepsy and pain management. It isn't too costly, works out to be around $1.00 per day, depending upon the clinic you are utilizing. All pets are a financial commitment.

    • No young children present in the home - Any kids in the home or often in the home must be over 8 years old and doggy knowledgeable (so able to read her signals).

PLEASE NOTE: Before applying for our dogs, please do read the above adopter requirements and ensure that you meet these. We are very clear about the homes we are seeking. We set the adopter requirements after consultation with the foster carers and consideration of the dogs, needs, welfare and personality. They are strict requirements - no exceptions. Please do not submit an application if you do not meet the above, we will simply respond to confirm the application is declined. Unfortunately, at times this has been the case and we have had to disappoint prospective adopters. This is why we are clear about our requirements prior and note them above.

Adoption Fee: A donation to be paid to the NZCR trust account no. 03-0823-0074502-000 to assist the trust with recouping some of the costs spent on Jules, for the next dog coming into care!

PLEASE NOTE - RE: THE ADOPTION FEES AND TRIALS: Our adoption fees are determined by taking into account age of the dog, overall health and funds expended to date on that particular dog. The trust uses these adoption fee funds on: de-sexing surgery, micro-chip and NZCAR registration, vaccines, Council registration, flea and worm treatments, plus any other essentials dogs require such as specialist medications or food, blood-testing, orthopaedic surgeries etc. and any other dog disposables required for dogs in care. Please note: sorry we do not accept payment plans, as we need to be sure adopters are able to financially support dogs prior to adoption - sorry, no exceptions. Please note: the deposit needs to be made to the trust account prior to the changeover date of the dog going on trial. We do not accept cash payments on the date. The full100% of all adoption fees go towards  the dogs in the care of the Trust.
