New Zealand Chihuahua Rescue

Experienced Rescue Dog Home Needed!

NOTE: The Identity of the dog is withheld from general public view due to request of the prior owner

A 4-5 year old, female of around 5-6kg, crossbreed (not Chihuahua) but other toy breeds. A true rescue dog, to be homed with someone who has a genuine desire to commit to a dog that has had a sad past and be patient with her.

*** Please read ALL of the above information and only email us if you meet the adopter requirements! ***

Adopter Requirements:

  1. Gender: NOT suitable for a solo female, or for a female couple. She has a clear gender preference for males and does not trust female owners. At very least, she needs a male and female couple. But best suited to a solo male or bonus points for a male same-sex couple! Any female owners in the home will need to be willing to commit to taking things slowly.
  2. Experience: The most important requirement with this dog is - this dog needs an experienced,  understanding and patient Adopter.  One who can persist with training, as the dog is a work in progress. Her new family MUST have experience with rescue dogs and dog training.
  3. Working Hours: No full time workers. This dog is not suitable for a doggy-daycare or to be taken to a busy workplace... Would do best with someone retired (yet active), part time (if an out of home worker) or a full-time (working from home) owner.
  4. Fencing: Must have escape-proof fencing as they are small but can jump! No holes or gaps.
  5. No kids: Not suitable to be around young children, any kids in the home are to be 10 years or older.
  6. Introverted Personality: If you are looking for an outgoing, social dog, this dog is NOT a match for you. Not suitable for someone who has visitors to the home too often.
  7. Location: If the relevant experience and training ability was there, we would consider wider New Zealand applicants. But they MUST have rescue dog experience and be willing to attend a meet/greet in Christchurch to meet the dog and their foster parents.
  8. Other animals: Fine with cats and birds. Fine with other (small breed) dogs.

PERSONALITY:

  • Tends to bond very closely and strongly with males (its much easier for her).
  • Once she bonds to you, This Dog is very affectionate and absolutely loves to snuggle and be with "her person".
  • Described as: thoughtful, intelligent, reserved, wary and timid
  • This Dog is fine with other dogs. She largely ignores them but has a select few that she has enjoyed being in the company of.
  • This Dog is scared by sudden actions or loud noises.
  • This Dog is VERY food or treat motivated, which assists her with all the training she needs.
  • This Dog can be an anxious dog, but she hasn't had much exposure to other things or situations. If you do not manage her correctly, she can become frantic and pace when anxious
  • This Dog has not had much exposure to the outside world and are learning a lot about what being a "pet" entails. This Dog has done well with her toilet-training, but this will need to be continued and reinforced by their adopter.
  • This Dog is fine on a lead and in the car.
  • This Dog might become unsure and bark at strangers in the home. This needs to be carefully managed and she would not be a suitable dog for someone looking for a social dog, or who has a lot of visitors in the home.

HEALTH:

  • Good health - will be adopted de-sexed, vaccinated up to date, dental recently completed, microchipped and NZCAR registered and Council registered, as all of our dogs are.
  • One joints issue, details to be discussed with applicants and vet records can be provided if desired.
