Private surrender - previous owner feels she needs someone able to be home a lot more and with her during the day and able to assist with her skin issues. This previous owner had Tilly for 2.5 years. Prior to this, she had another owner. We want to make sure that her next home is her safe, loving, stable forever home!
Tilly's former owner says that she is very affectionate, friendly, loves attention and tummy rubs!
Tilly is quite good with strangers, overall a very friendly and social little dog.
Tilly also enjoys car rides and going for walks.
Tilly has lived with cats all her life, and is in foster care with other Chihuahuas and cats (Maine coons) at present. Tilly can be food possessive, so needs to be fed away from the other animals to prevent any skuffles.
Due to her former life, Tilly is still getting used to being a much-adored family pet. As a result, she's not 100% used to sitting on someone's knee for pats. She will also do odd things like curl up in a ball in the middle of the floor, or middle of the lawn to sleep!
Tilly is also still learning her toilet training so any prospective adopter will need to be mindful of this, patient and able to continue with training.
We will add further details once Tilly has been in care and we get to know her better.
When Tilly came into care in July 2021 we were very shocked to see that she had itchy, red, swollen skin and patches of fur missing. Tilly was extremely itchy, so much so, she tore open her skin and had red sores under her fur. We've had to shave patches on Tilly, so it will take a while for this fur to re-grow. Tilly was rushed to our vet on 26/07/2021 so we could determine the cause of this itching. Our vet believes it was a nasty case of flea dermatitis, due to Tilly not being flea treated adequately.
Tilly had live fleas when she came into care (she is now flea-free) but living with fleas for the past 2.5years has caused flea dermatitis which affects the skin. Tilly has been given: flea treatments, a medicated shampoo wash for her skin, an injection of Cyntopoint and medications for a chronic ear infection. Already, the difference is huge.
Tilly's ears were so inflamed and sore they were black on the inside. We have never seen this before. Our vet put her on antibiotics and ear drops to address the chronic ear infections.
Tilly will be flea and worm treated every 3 months while in trust care, to be continued by the Adopter. This is crucial.
Tilly was fed cat food prior which we have changed to Orijen Original. If the skin continues to flare, Tilly will be placed on new allergic vet food which will assist if she has any food allergies secondary to the flea dermatitis.
Tilly has been vaccinated and de-sexed on 09/09/2021. We will also ensure that she is micro-chipped (with the chip registered with the NZ Companion Animal Register and the local Council) as all of our dogs are.
Help us to Help Tilly!
Skin allergies can be very expensive to diagnose and/or correct. We will need all the assistance we can get in order to meet the expenses for little Tilly, to ensure she is comfortable.
New Zealand Chihuahua Rescue is a New Zealand Registered Charity run completely by volunteers. Nobody is paid to participate in our Rescue and 100% of the profits go back into the dogs in our care and community dogs needing assistance. We receive no public funding or grants. Our entire income to assist these dogs is derived from kind donations, sponsorship and fundraising projects. We are always short of money and it impacts how many dogs we can assist as each dog that comes into care needs some form of medical and/or behavioral assistance!
If you could help by donating to Tilly's cause, all donations, small or large, help us to help her! Please also contact us for a receipt and you can receive 33.33% of your donation back from the IRD

- Tilly is available for adoption New Zealand wide, due to her happy demeanor. However, the Adopter will need to visit our adoptions page, view the out of town adoptions process and be willing to adhere to this. This includes traveling to Christchurch to meet her and her foster carer. No exceptions so please do not ask for any.
- Tilly would be OK as either a solo dog in the home, or with one other older, calm, lower energy dog.
- Tilly would not be suitable for a full time (out of the home) worker or someone out of the home often. Tilly is not suitable for a "doggy daycare" arrangement. Someone who is part time, working from home or retired would be ideal for Tilly.
- Must have a fully fenced backyard with no holes or gaps.
- Tilly would probably prefer a quiet household with older children. We would not adopt Tilly to anyone with children younger than 8 years. All children in the home need to be doggy knowledgeable and aware of boundaries when it comes to dogs. Tilly would be better with older children and a quiet household.
- Must continue to reinforce her toilet training.
- Adopter must ensure that Tilly remains up to date with her flea and worming and on a quality diet. Also able to commit to attending to her skin flares if/when needed.
PLEASE NOTE: Before applying for our dogs, please do read the above adopter requirements and ensure that you meet these. We are very clear about the homes we are seeking. We set the adopter requirements after consultation with the foster carers and consideration of the dogs, needs, welfare and personality. They are strict requirements - no exceptions. Please do not submit an application if you do not meet the above, we will simply respond to confirm the application is declined. Unfortunately, at times this has been the case and we have had to disappoint prospective adopters. This is why we are clear about our requirements prior and note them above.
Adoption Fee: $400.00 to be paid to the NZCR trust account no. 03-0823-0074502-000
PLEASE NOTE - RE: THE ADOPTION FEES AND TRIALS: Our adoption fees are determined by taking into account age of the dog, overall health and funds expended to date on that particular dog. The trust uses these adoption fee funds on: de-sexing surgery, micro-chip and NZCAR registration, vaccines, Council registration, flea and worm treatments, plus any other essentials dogs require such as specialist medications or food, blood-testing, orthopaedic surgeries etc. and any other dog disposables required for dogs in care. Please note: sorry we do not accept payment plans, as we need to be sure adopters are able to financially support dogs prior to adoption - sorry, no exceptions. Please note: the deposit needs to be made to the trust account prior to the changeover date of the dog going on trial. We do not accept cash payments on the date. The full100% of all adoption fees go towards the dogs in the care of the Trust.
