Tosh and Mac came in together after one of their owners passed away and the other moved and was unable to bring pets. Tosh and Mac were separated as they have very different needs and Tosh's behavior tends to be better on her own.
Although she may appear "cute" and small, Tosh is a stroppy little dog who needs a doggy-knowledgeable and confident Adopter. We need someone who is able to implement boundaries. Rescue dog knowledge and experience would be a benefit.
Please do consider Tosh's personality and needs before applying for her - we have many applicants who are attracted to the "looks" of a dog without understanding the commitment they are making.
Tosh's former owner says she can be a bit "stroppy" and defensive when anyone comes to her property. She will benefit from some socializing and training prior to adoption which we are working on at present.
Once she gets to know you, Tosh is very loyal, loving and affectionate - she loves cuddling into you and sitting on your lap.
Tosh is said to be "shy" around dogs that she does not know, but is being fostered and socialized with other dogs at present. She tends to be fairly dominant which can put other dogs off. Tosh will push in ahead of the others for affection (this could cause conflict if rehomed with a dog who also loves attention.
Tosh also lives with two cats and loves them, so would be fine in a cat household.
Tosh is toilet trained and good in the car.
Tosh had her vet check on 21/09/2021. Tosh is slightly overweight which we are working on at present. This causes her to snort and snuffle more than usual. Her patellas and heart are all fine.
Tosh had a dental to remove baby teeth on 30/09/2021. But our vet is unsure whether there are unerupted teeth under the jaw. If there are and these are left inside, they could rot away. So, as a result, we have been referred to another vet practice to take some dental x-rays and it is possible Tosh may need a second dental to remove those un-erupted teeth if they are present. Once the x-rays are done we will know if she needs any further dental treatment.
Any adopter will need to keep an eye on her dental health. All toy breeds need dental checks every 6-12months at least and a dental under anesthetic when recommended by a vet (remember: these aren't cheap! but if you want to own a toy breed, you need to be willing to meet those costs).
Tosh also needs to be vaccinated up to date.
Tosh will be flea and worm treated every 3 months while in trust care, to be continued by the Adopter. Tosh will be adopted out de-sexed, vaccinated up to date, micro-chipped (with the chip registered with the NZ Companion Animal Register and the local Council) as all of our dogs are.
Help us to Help Tosh!
New Zealand Chihuahua Rescue is a New Zealand Registered Charity run completely by volunteers. Nobody is paid to participate in our Rescue and 100% of the profits go back into the dogs in our care and community dogs needing assistance. We receive no public funding or grants. Our entire income to assist these dogs is derived from kind donations, sponsorship and fundraising projects. We are always short of money and it impacts how many dogs we can assist as each dog that comes into care needs some form of medical and/or behavioral assistance!
If you could help by donating to Tosh's cause, all donations, small or large, help us to help her! Please also contact us for a receipt and you can receive 33.33% of your donation back from the IRD.

- Preferably, Tosh is to be adopted within the Canterbury area, as she can be fearful of strangers and would benefit from careful integration into her new home with our team's assistance. BUT We would potentially consider an Adopter from outside of Canterbury provided they had the necessary rescue dog experience. They would need to travel to meet Tosh and adhere to the terms of our out of town adoptions policy (see adoptions tab for details).
- No Adopters who are out of the home for large periods of time please. This means no full time (out of the home) workers. Tosh would benefit from someone active, yet retired, working from home, or working very part time. Tosh would not be suitable for doggy-daycare or being taken to a busy work place - she is fearful of strangers so that would not work well. We do not adopt companion dogs to full time (out of home) workers.
- Tosh would be fine with another (small breed) dog in the home or as a solo dog. Tosh is fine with cats.
- Tosh needs a fully fenced home and property with no holes or gaps. This includes rural properties - no exceptions.
- Tosh needs a doggy-knowledgeable and confident Adopter who is able to implement boundaries and assist her with socialisation. Rescue dog knowledge and experience would be a benefit.
*We may add other requirements once we get to know Tosh better.
PLEASE NOTE: Before applying for our dogs, please do read the above adopter requirements and ensure that you meet these. We are very clear about the homes we are seeking. We set the adopter requirements after consultation with the foster carers and consideration of the dogs, needs, welfare and personality. They are strict requirements - no exceptions. Please do not submit an application if you do not meet the above, we will simply respond to confirm the application is declined. Unfortunately, at times this has been the case and we have had to disappoint prospective adopters. This is why we are clear about our requirements prior and note them above.
Adoption Fee: $530.00 to be paid to the NZCR trust account no. 03-0823-0074502-000 (note: $30.00 is a disbursement charged by DogsNZ for registration of her pedigree papers. The papers MUST be transferred to her adopter, once the trial concludes)
PLEASE NOTE - RE: THE ADOPTION FEES AND TRIALS: Our adoption fees are determined by taking into account age of the dog, overall health and funds expended to date on that particular dog. The trust uses these adoption fee funds on: de-sexing surgery, micro-chip and NZCAR registration, vaccines, Council registration, flea and worm treatments, plus any other essentials dogs require such as specialist medications or food, blood-testing, orthopaedic surgeries etc. and any other dog disposables required for dogs in care. Please note: sorry we do not accept payment plans, as we need to be sure adopters are able to financially support dogs prior to adoption - sorry, no exceptions. Please note: the deposit needs to be made to the trust account prior to the changeover date of the dog going on trial. We do not accept cash payments on the date. The full100% of all adoption fees go towards the dogs in the care of the Trust.
