Personality:
Barney is a gorgeous little Chihuahua cross, estimated to be around 2 years old and weighing approximately 5.3kg. He came into our care after being found wandering in Christchurch. Sadly, nobody came forward to claim him, so the lovely team at Council Animal Control contacted NZCR to help him find a new beginning.
Barney has been described as a sweet, friendly and sociable little boy who is easy to handle.
As Barney has only recently joined us, we're still getting to know him and learning about his personality, preferences and what sort of home would suit him best. We will also add more photos as we go.
Please note: further details will be added as we get to know the new arrival better as they have just entered NZCR care.
Health:
Barney has been microchipped, vaccinated and desexed by the Christchurch City Pound and has no known health concerns. There have been no concerns with respect to his teeth, heart, eyes etc. He is recovering from being desexed on 09.10.2026.
Note: All dogs from NZCR are adopted only after being medically cleared by our vet, desexed, vaccinated, microchipped (registered with the NZ Companion Animal Register and local Council), and treated for fleas and worms
Next Steps:
Each incoming dog will spend time settling into foster care. They will visit our vet for their consult and to book in any desexing, dentals or any other necessary treatment. While in our care, we continue to update their profiles with details on their health, behaviour needs, and quirks. Foster parents observe the dogs as they become comfortable in their new environment to assess any behaviour or training needs, which helps determine their adopter requirements. The profiles are updated regularly, so if you're interested in a dog, please check back for "available for adoption" status and apply IF you meet their requirements.
Adopter Requirements:
* Please refrain from applying just yet, as we haven’t listed the adopter requirements. We need time to understand the dog’s personality and needs. If you're interested, please check back for updates and apply when the dog is ready for adoption.
Note: Before applying to adopt, please ensure you meet the adopter requirements listed above. These guidelines are set with the dogs' needs in mind, based on input from foster carers. If you do not meet these requirements, your application will be declined as there are no exceptions. Please review the criteria carefully. Thank you!
Adoption Fee: $TBC to be paid to the NZCR trust account no. 03-0823-0074502-000
Note: Our adoption fees reflect the dog’s age, health, and care needs. They cover microchipping (NZCAR registration), vaccinations, de-sexing, current-year council registration, and any necessary treatments, including flea/worm treatments, medications, surgeries (e.g., dental), and food. Payment plans are not available, as adopters must show financial readiness for the expense that comes with pet ownership. Click below for more details on our adoption process.
Our modest income is a result of your kind donations, sponsorship, and our fundraising projects. The dogs in care each require medical or behavioural assistance so we're often short on funds - sadly this limits how many dogs we can help!
If you can, please consider donating to our cause either as a one-off or on an ongoing basis. Every donation, big or small, makes a difference!

Each donation received helps us to be able to continue our good work.
We are a volunteer-run charity that survives off of donations and fundraising projects. Thank you for your support and giving dogs a second chance!
