Personality:
- Milo’s former owner said he is good with people he knows but due to his past, he is timid around strangers initially. Milo has come into care urgently as his owner is facing eviction.
- We understand that he was a rescue from a puppy farm situation prior and still carries some behaviours from that experience.
- Milo is said to be cat-friendly and social with other dogs. Milo is being fostered with two other Chihuahuas at present. He is great with one of the dogs (who is normally very timid) and they have struck up a great, playful little friendship. We think he would benefit from having another dog in the adoptive household.
- While in our care, Milo will begin his crate and lead training. We also hope to help with growing his confidence around new people.
* Further details to be added.
Health:
- Milo had his vet consult for assessment on 27th November 2024, he was vaccinated up to date and microchipped. Milo underwent bloods pre-anaesthetic and was desexed on 9.12.2024. He also had a (benign) umbilical hernia repaired at the same time, during surgery. Milo has recovered well, without issue.
- Milo doesn't require a dental yet, but this should be re-examined in 6-12 months and booked in then.
- Note: All dogs from NZCR are adopted only after being medically cleared by our vet, desexed, vaccinated, microchipped (registered with the NZ Companion Animal Register and local Council), and treated for fleas and worms.
Adopter Requirements:
* Clear photos of Milo will be uploaded once Milo has had the opportunity to meet with our Furtographer, Craig, after the holiday period.
- Given his shy and wary nature, Milo may need additional support, hence Canterbury-based applicants are preferable. Milo would only a candidate for an out-of-town adoption, for an applicant who meets all the below requirements and has experience with similar rescue dogs and the socialisation or training required. as with all applicants, they will need to travel to Christchurch to meet Milo and his foster family.
- Chihuahuas are companion dogs and each require someone who can spend time with them during weekdays. This means no full-time (out-of-home) workers, who are expecting to leave the dog alone for several hours, multiple days per week. These dogs each require someone who either works very part-time, can take the dog to work with them (after they’ve adjusted to the home environment first!), someone retired but active, or who is able to work permanently from home.
- Milo needs a very secure home, so full fencing with NO holes or gaps. This includes rural properties. You must at least have a fenced in, safe backyard for toileting and ensure he cannot escape.
- Children in the home must be at least 6-7 years old and doggy knowledgeable. It is crucial they understand not to overwhelm Milo and give plenty of space.
- Milo needs another Chihuahua or small breed dog in the home. Milo’s foster brother has helped break him out of his shell so we think he would benefit from a home with at least one other (small breed) dog to play with. Milo is not suitable to be with an older, low energy dog (as his energy would likely annoy them). He needs a social and playful dog that matches his energy.
- Milo would benefit from an owner with rescue dog, dog training or dog behaviour knowledge. He can be wary of new people and needs to work on his confidence and socialisation. He will need an owner capable of doing so, or committed to working with a trainer in order to achieve this.
Note: Before applying to adopt, please ensure you meet the adopter requirements listed above. These guidelines are set with the dogs' needs in mind, based on input from foster carers. If you do not meet these requirements, your application will be declined as there are no exceptions. Please review the criteria carefully. Thank you!
