What if I just save into an account for my pets or pay the vet weekly?

Self-insuring for your pet's medical expenses is often unreliable. As the funds set aside may be used for other unexpected expenses. When your pet needs medical attention, the costs can quickly add up, including  urgent tests or scans that could cost thousands of dollars, as well as  treatment, surgery, and after-hours fees. Therefore, we strongly  recommend pet insurance, which offers comprehensive coverage for a small  monthly premium, giving you peace of mind and financial protection in case of unexpected veterinary expenses.

What does Pet Cover Provide?

Pet Cover provide ongoing cover for the lifetime of your dog, as long as you don’t take a break in cover. Plus a range of policies to suit different needs and budgets, low excesses, fast payouts, and the option to pay vet clinics directly. Their focus solely on cats, dogs, and  horses allows them to prioritize settling claims and providing friendly and helpful customer service. 

How old is too old? Is there a cut-off age for pet insurance?

Most pet insurance companies have a cut off age of 8 years (5 for some breeds), with limited options for dogs over that age. To ensure maximum coverage, it's best to insure your pet from birth with lifetime cover, as breaks in coverage may result in age restrictions. For signing up via NZCR, the dog must be between 8 weeks and 8 years old, with certain breeds having a cut off age of 5 years.

What is a selected breed?

Just as some dogs cost more to feed, some also cost more in veterinary care. We call these 'Select Breeds’.

The  following dogs are considered 'Select Breeds': Bandog, Bavarian  Mountain Hound, Bergamasco Shepherd Dog, Briard, Blood  Hound, Boerboel, Beauceron, Bernese Mountain Dog, Boston Terrier,  Bracco, All Bulldogs (i.e. English, American, Australian, Miniature,  etc.), Bull Arab, Deerhound, Dogue de Bordeaux, Entlebucher Mountain  Dog, Estrela Mountain Dog, Grand Blue De Gascoigne, Great Dane, Greater  Swiss Mountain Dog, Hamiltonstovare, Hungarian Kuvasz, Irish Wolfhound,  Komondor, Maremma Sheepdog, Leonberger, All Mastiff Breeds, Newfoundland, Old English Sheepdog, Polish Lowland Sheepdog,  Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Rottweiler, Russian Black Terrier, Shar Pei, St  Bernard or any crosses of these breeds. Please note, customers with various breeds need to provide the full vet history from the vet before we are able to insure them. They must be under 5 years of age.

How does signing up for insurance with Pet Cover help the Rescue?

Pet Cover generously donates 10% of premium funds for each dog signed up via our rescue to support our cause, regardless of adoption through NZCR. By signing up your dog through us, you can be a responsible pet owner while also donating towards our charity.

OPTION A. 1 MONTH FREE TRIAL!:

ONLY FOR DOGS BETWEEN 8 WEEKS - 5 YEARS OLD 

DOGS MUST BE ADOPTED FROM NZCR

If your pet is between 8weeks - 5years of age and you have adopted your dog from us, you can sign up with Pet Cover and receive 4 weeks' FREE Pet Cover insurance.  

This cover* includes:

• Cover* for dogs 8 weeks - 5 years of age if they are a standard breed of dog (This is reduced to 3 years for selected large breeds (not Chihuahuas) - please contact Pet Cover for confirmation of those).

• Cover* for all cat breeds from 8 weeks - 5 years of age.

• Cover* for dogs 8 weeks - 3 years of age for select and "underwriting" dog breeds (ie. all bulldog breeds, dogue de bordeaux, shar pei, pug, greyhound, newfoundlands, leonbergers, boston terriers, list may be subject to change)

• Only a 3 day waiting period for cover* of injuries or accidents and 14 days for illnesses.

•  Up to $3,000.00 cover* for vet fees and alternative treatment (ie. acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractors, hydrotherapy, osteopathy) for illness and injury, including hospitalization, referral and medicines.

• Up to $500.000 death from injury cover*.

• Cover* for $400.00 advertising and reward funds for if your pet gets lost or stolen. Pet Cover  will meet the costs of local newspaper advertising and a reward!

* This cover is only able to be given to Adopters (sorry!) it is also is subject to meeting minimum acceptance criteria. Policy limits, terms and conditions and exclusions may apply. Exclusions include: de-sexing, routine care (vaccines, flea and working), elective treatments, dental costs, euthanasia, cremation and/or autopsy costs, food.

How do I sign up for the free trial?
1. Simply either email us: at contact@nzchihuahuarescue.co.nz with the following details:

- Your full legal name

- Phone number, 

- Street address

- Which dog you have adopted from NZCR.

2. We will contact Pet Cover  on your behalf to ensure they put the cover in place.

What happens next: At the end of the 4 weeks a friendly representative will call you to discuss whether you would like to sign up permanently and discuss the right plan that fits your circumstances. Please also view the link below for information on these plans. If you do decide to take out insurance on your pet, you will be donating to our Rescue 10% of your premium at the same time!

OPTION B. 

IF YOU HAVEN'T ADOPTED VIA NZCR 

BUT WOULD LIKE TO SIGN UP YOUR DOG OR CAT

If you haven't adopted from  NZ Chihuahua Rescue, but still wish to sign up via our charity, we will receive a portion of the premium! This is for dogs (or cats) that are between 8 weeks - 8 years of age, or 5 years for some select breeds.  For this, you do not need to be an "adopter" for us to recieve this donation - simply sign up via our Rescue using the below steps. 

1. Simply download the form and email us: at contact@nzchihuahuarescue.co.nz . We need the below completed Pet Cover form (see the downloads section at the bottom of this page) If you would like a paper copy, feel free to email us and we can send this to you. You will need to complete the form and select your plan (these can be reviewed by clicking the below link).

*** NOTE: If your pet is 7 years or older - please contact your vet to organize for their history to be sent to Pet Cover: They will need full veterinary history sent to Pet Cover direct after they receive your form.
