Personality:
- Roo is a sweet, active and friendly little dog who enjoys walks and picks up training commands quickly, due to her clever nature.
- Roo's foster mum feels that she will need a playful doggy companion in the home. An older, less energetic dog would not be a match. Roo would suit a younger, playful/companion.
- Roo lived with another small dog happily, although they weren't overly bonded, and they didn't play together. Roo has been living with one other chihuahua and a cat while in foster care.
- In terms of cats: Roo will either ignore or play with the cat at her former home. So she would be fine to add to a household with a confident, dog knowledgeable cat.
- Roo can be timid and wary around new people, but she quickly warms up when given space and gentle encouragement. During her first week in foster care, she was cautious. Roo's foster mum says Roo was "suspicious/timid the first week. Then she's your best friend. Def would like another active dog in the home and a person or family who are keen for big walks."
- Children: Roo has also been around children without issue, although never unsupervised. Roo doesn't like to be picked up, she prefers to come to you and hop up on your lap. So both our foster team and her previous owner think that she is suited to older children (at least 7 years+) who are doggy-knowledgeable and able to understand her signals.
- Please note: further details will be added as we get to know Roo better and she will meet with Craig (Furtography) our wonderful animal photographer, for some beautiful "Adopt Me" shots.
Health:
- Soon after Roo entered care with us, she completed her veterinary assessment on 20.11.2024 and had a groom.
- No health issues noted by the former owner, or our vet at her recent health assessment appointment.
- A note on our medical care policies: our rescue dogs become available to adopt only after being medically checked by our vet, desexed, vaccinated, microchipped (which is registered with the New Zealand Companion Animal Register and local Council), and treated for fleas and worms (at minimum). At their initial vet assessment, we will learn whether they require any additional diagnostics, medical treatments or procedures. Any issues or ongoing health conditions and medications or diets required will be noted here on their profile. We absolutely will not adopt out any entire dog or help public locate dogs for breeding - we're a dog rescue!
Next Steps:
- Each incoming dog will spend time settling into foster care. They will visit our vet for their consult and to book in any necessary treatment. While in our care, we continue to update their profiles with any available details on their health, behaviour needs, and quirks. As you can appreciate, we cannot individually update interested potential applicants, so we update their public profiles regularly.
- Foster parents observe the dogs as they become comfortable in their new environment for any behaviour or training needs. This helps us to determine their adopter requirements - what kind of home they need. The profiles are updated regularly, so if you're interested in a dog, please check back for "available for adoption" status and apply IF you read the below and consider honestly whether you meet Roo's requirements.
Adopter Requirements:
* Please do not apply at the moment as we haven’t listed their adopter requirements. We need time to understand the dog’s personality and needs. If you're interested, please check back for updates and apply when the dog is noted as "ready for adoption."
Adoption Fee: $TBC to be paid to the NZCR trust account no. 03-0823-0074502-000
Note: Before applying to adopt, please ensure you meet the adopter requirements. These guidelines are set with the dogs' needs in mind, based on input from foster carers. If you do not meet these requirements, your application will be declined so please review the criteria carefully. Thank you!
Note: Our adoption fees reflect the dog’s age, health, and care needs. They cover microchipping (NZCAR registration), vaccinations, de-sexing, current-year council registration, and any necessary treatments, including flea/worm treatments, medications, surgeries (e.g., dental), and food. Payment plans are not available, as adopters must show financial readiness for the expense that comes with pet ownership. Click below for more details on our adoption process.
